If you?re wondering why ABS-CBN adjusted its primetime schedule to air the "Pinoy Big Brother" Teen Edition earlier, right after "TV Patrol," it?s because the network was said to have received a warning from the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) to strictly adhere to the guidelines of the department in employing minors. In the case of "PBB" Teen Edition, the participants are 16 to 18 years of age and are therefore still considered as minors.DoLE guidelines state that minors cannot be engaged to working beyond eight hours a day or beyond 40 days a week. The minors should not also be required to work between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following day. Otherwise, ABS-CBN would have violated the DoLE rules and sanctions need to be imposed.
No wonder, last Sunday?s launch of "PBB" Teen Edition was pre-taped starting at 7 p.m. and had a delayed airing on TV at 10 p.m. "PBB" previously aired on a late-night slot, from the time it premiered on local TV in August last year.
Due to the DoLE warning, "PBB" is also reportedly canceling its 24/7 video streaming on cable, which is said to have thousands of subscribers starting from the first season up until the celebrity edition.
Even if "PBB" is a contest which does not require work permit for its participants, DoLE pointed out that engaging the teens in a 24/7 coverage would mean work. Of course, the housemates get an allowance for joining the show.
We heard DoLE required the birth certificates of the 12 teens, as well as copies of their contracts with "PBB." The department insisted that it will strictly supervise and monitor the reality program to ensure the protection and safety of the participants.
However, what?s this we heard that a 15-year-old contestant inadvertently made it to the lineup of housemates in the Teen Edition? "PBB" producers are now said to be having a dilemma on whether or not to make the contestant stay or ask him to quit.
Although it will truly be disheartening for the kid, it?s better to release the housemate this early to be fair to the other hopefuls who auditioned and were turned down. In case they found out, "PBB" will only get the ire of the teens or their parents and therefore would have a lot of mending to do.
The 12 housemates were picked from over 30,000 teens who auditioned last March in Metro Manila, Davao, and Cebu. The housemates would be facing tasks and challenges assigned to them by Big Brothers. Since the housemates are all teenagers, all the challenges are expected to fit their ages and lifestyle.
Come June 3, when "PBB" Teen Edition ends, fabulous prizes await the winner, including a condo unit and P1 million in cash.
The catchy theme for the Teen Edition is "Kabataang Pinoy," recorded by Itchyworms.
